Why not two SBC presidential candidates?

Posted on 15 February 2006 by David Phillips

Tom Ascol at the Founder’s blog asks some interesting questions about the nomination of Johnny Hunt as President of the SBC (HT Steve McCoy). Within the comments section, the issue is made that if two conservatives were both nominate for president, then the possibility that a moderate may sweep in and with a split vote among conservatives, steal the show.

A blogger names Sojourner has a good thought on this notion:

What kind of maturity level do we display as a denomination when straighforward debate and two candidates for President will cause us to fall to pieces? Secondly, isn’t it a bit ridiculous, even hyprocritical, to avoid such ‘trouble’ under the guise of false unity? A debate or two candidates would not fracture our denomination, if it is that bad, it would only indicate how deeply we are divided.

I think he makes some great points. Shouldn’t there be good debate and a choice given? Isn’t this democracy at work in it’s purest form? I would advocate that another candidate should be nominated. It is noted in again in the comments by blogger Bill0165:

We need to remember that when Bobby Welch was nominated to be SBC president that a fellow who was spontaneously nominated from the floor of the convention received 30+% of the vote. There is a growing disatisfaction in the SBC, witnessed by the more than 30% who seized the opportunity to vote AGAINST Bobby Welch primarily because he was the latest person ANOINTED by the powers that be.

Names mentioned in the comments:

Mark Dever
Tom Ascol
Buddy Gray (Hunter Street Baptist in Birmingham, AL)
Roy Hargrave (Riverbend Church Ormond Beach, Florida)
Hayes Wicker (FBC Naples, FL)

I think Buddy Gray is an excellent choice. Hunter Street is the kind of example people like me hope happen at our church. I don’t know any of the others but am willing to listen.

As I said on Steve McCoy’s site, I think Johnny Hunt is a good man. FBCW was very helpful to our church start. I don’t have anything in common when it comes to methodology.

    Kevin,

I agree about Buddy. He was doing some tremendous things in B’ham when I was there. And he wasn’t political about it all either. Just a guy going about kingdom work and pressing forward. My kind of leader.
