The Mohler/Patterson “discussion”

Posted on 12 June 2006 by David Phillips

I’m going to post this and it is raw, but I’m about to head out and wanted to get it up.

Mohler shows up, only a couple of days after surgery with dark glasses.  Joe Thorn says he looks like the blues brothers, which I commented that “He’s on a mission from God!

Sitting behind Joe Thorn, Scott Slayton, Steve McCoy

Patterson speaks first for 20 minutes.

Appreciate about most Calvinists
Lead pious lives
Theology is crucially important
All were clear about dangers involved in charismatic
Glorify god in everything
Never question innerency of scripture
Salvation by grace alone

Concerns
If not a Calvinist, must be arminian
Not a calvinst you don’t accept doctrines of grace
Not a Calvinist don’t believe in sovereignty of God
Anti-nominan tendancies in some Calvinists
Not being forthright with pulpit committees
Compassionlessness for lost world (in some people)

Why I am not a Dortian Calvinists
Do not find any biblical case for irresistible grace.  It is coercive.
Universal atonement is too compelling.  Christ died for ALL men
Two precise statements that link foreknowledge to predestination
Desire to see God who is both just and good,  Impossible to find justice in God created some for destruction
Too often is the death knell for many people
Calvinism is a system and Baptist need to take
Calvin

Doing Evangelism
How does the way I look at election assist us in doing evangelism.  I believe that it is God’s will that all be saved.  Not all will be saved, but that is his will.

Mohler looks asleep while listening to Paige as Paige rambles about universal atonement.

Man can resist God.  At that point, man is God, not God.

Mohler’s turn.
Friendship of the gospel that transcends any other concerns.

The doctrine of election is about God saving sinners.  We are here to talk theology.  He’s thankful. God is giving our denomination a second chance.

I believe in the doctrines of Grace.  I affirm all five points.

Effectual calling.  Don’t believe a person can be made to salvation.  But once that work begins it will lead to salvation.

God is a choosing God.  He chose Israel and Jacob.  He chooses sinners.

We are more in more than one way or another all some form of Calvinists.
