What aspect does culture play in truth?

Posted on 29 January 2007 by David Phillips

I heard someone recently (can’t remember who but they are were strong conservative christian thinker in the mode of Mark Driscoll) discuss a conversation he had with a preacher from South America.  They were talking about the story of Jesus and the women at the well.  Our USAmerican culture looks at that story and is critical of the woman (I’ve done my fair share).  But this man said that his Central American friend reminded him that the only person who can ask for a divorce in their culture is the man.  Therefore the woman is a victim, not the woman we make her out to be.  This person, stated that this thought gave him pause to reconsider the culture’s impact on understanding truth.

If that is true, what role does your cultural experiences play in understanding what is truth?  What role should it play in understanding truth?
