My doctoral research over the past year and a half has focused on the topic of transformational change. I wanted to look at how to integrate science and theology into a theology of transformational change. I have looked at Psychology, emotional intelligence, and community formation, which includes sociology. Most recently I looked at research in the area of neuroplasticity, or how the brain can literally rewire itself. I will further study communication practices and neurolinguistics, environment creation, and the role of the Holy Spirit in coordinating all these areas to truly produce transformational change.
I will soon begin to share some of the insights into this. And I will be creating a website at helpme2change.com. My intention in our church is to preach through my research and use that as a springboard to process my research into my dissertation, which will be a publishable manuscript. Those sermons, and sermon summaries will be available at helpme2change.com.
I really look forward to sharing all this with you over the next year.
As a result, I’m focusing 2008 around the topic of Change Theology. I’m playing around with either “Welcome to You” which is a song by Trevor Morgan or just doing HelpMe2Change. Either way, we will look at the role of the mind, emotions, community, communication, environment, relationships, experiences, theology, and the Holy Spirit and the change process. My goal is to help the church understand that it requires us to do more than encourage people to pray more or read their Bible more or spend more time at church. There is a huge process that goes into this and we need to understand it. I hope to write it in a way that is comprehensive yet geared towards those without a background in science.

David, one book that I read for my studies (a few chapters at least) that I thought might fit your research, is “Walking with the Poor: Principles and Practices of Transformational Development” by Bryant Myers. Are you familiar with this? If so, what was your take on the book?

Brad,
I’m not familiar with it. I’ll check it out, however.
