Years ago, when I was really into collecting Christian Music CD’s, there was a lady named Pam Thum whom I absolutely adored. Not only did she have incredible voice and wonderful lyrics, but she was quite attractive and I was a single college/seminary student. Now of course, I’m married to most wonderful and beautiful lady around.
One song that really captured my heart was called Life is Hard, But God is Good. The lyrics are:

Your message is clear you sound so sincere
your intentions are good
The forgiveness of sin life without end
I’d believe it if I could
But I’ve watched from afar and I’ve seen how you are
with the people you’re around
And I don’t see a trace of the love and the grace
you talk so much about
If you want to lead me to Jesus
you’d better find a better way
‘Cause your life is speaking so loud I can’t even
hear a word you say
If winning the duel is your golden rule
no matter the cost
Then you may win the day but the price you pay
is the greater war that’s lost
You would not believe how different it seems
from the outside looking in
But the louder you shout the more I tune out
and the less I am convinced
If you want to lead me to Jesus
you’d better find a better way
‘Cause your life is speaking so loud I can’t even
hear a word you say
I want to believe
but I am going to need you
to work with me here
Work with me here
Work with me here
If you want to lead me to Jesus
you’d better find a better way
‘Cause your life is speaking so loud I can’t even
hear a word
If you want to lead me to Jesus
you’d better find a better way
‘Cause your life is speaking so loud I can’t even
hear a word you say
Hear a word you say
Hear a word you say

I friend I met in several months ago has made several excellent blog posts on how Christians are perceived. She invites us to sit at the table with a good cup of coffee and listen tot he dialog with her. She is “inviting all of you to simply sit at the table with us. listen in on one of our conversations. hear the heart of one who is grappling with life and searching for how God fits into it.” Oh, this one whom she is dialogging with…is a lesbian.
Here are the links:
Part one
Part two
Oh, and you can now follow the discussion from both sides by going here.
So grab a cup of cafe con letche and have a listen. Maybe we can all learn something.

A painting by my good friend Sam Raynor, who also does book cover designs for Missional Press. Pneumanaut is the combination of two words: pneuma, meaning Spirit, and naut, as in astro-naut or one who rides the stars. So pneumanaut is one who rides the Spirit, letting the Spirit take us, unfettered and uncontrolled.
